DENBIGH 42, WOODSIDE 13
NEWPORT NEWS --- Denbigh celebrated its seniors at Todd Stadium on Friday night, but it was a junior who earned the most praise from the Patriot faithful, and offered a glimpse of what the near future holds for Denbigh football.
Kevin Parker may be the most heralded athlete in Newport News, and against his neighborhood rival Woodside, the four-star recruit provided plenty of reasons to back up his status. Passing for precision and using his two legs as weapons, Parker ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more, leading the Patriots to a convincing 42-13 win over the Wolverines.
In all, the two-sport standout tossed for 187 yards on 16 of 28 passes, while rushing for 140 more yards on ten carries. The Patriots gained an early 15-0 advantage in the first quarter as Parker capitalized on a muffed Woodside punt snap which was recovered at the Wolverine 1-yard line. On the first play, Parker pushed into the end zone for the game’s first score.
On its next possession, the Patriots (4-5) struck again, this time with Parker catching Callen Morrison (five receptions, 62 yards) on a crossing route for a 29-yard score.
Three-yard scoring runs by Parker and Josiah Thompson extended the Denbigh lead, although the most notable catch came before those scores as Woodside’s Jabari Jackson caught a “50-50” ball from quarterback Terris Bowen and wrestled it from a defender’s hands for the visitors only touchdown of the first half.
Parker started the second half with the deciding touchdown, as the elusive signal caller broke to the right side, eluded two tacklers and scampered 57 yards for his third score of the night. His night was punctuated with a 31-yard toss, which caught Jashon McIntyre mid-stride, as the senior receiver strided over the final five yards for the touchdown.
Wolverine quarterback Bowen, who spent most of the night running from defenders, finally broke free late in the third quarter, sweeping right for a 16-yard score.
Denbigh raised its record to 4-5, and they will likely make the Class 4A playoffs as a visiting team. Woodside dropped to 3-5.
