POQUOSON 42 , SMITHFIELD 0
POQUOSON --- The Islanders staked their share of the Bay Rivers football crown on Friday, running to a 28-0 halftime lead against their foes from Smithfield and holding on for a 42-0 win.
With the victory, Poquoson will enter the Class 2A Region playoffs as at least a #2 seed (behind Armstrong) and could face Greensville (ranked #7 on November 5) in a first round matchup at home.
The Packers (6-4) had hoped to cap a successful regular season with a 7-3 mark heading into Region 4A play. Those hopes were dashed almost immediately as Dominic Galacgac tossed an 18-yard scoring pass to James Miller in the games first two minutes. Heath Reynolds would pound the rock into the end zone from eight yards to extend the hosts lead to 14 points at the first period’s end.
Austin Conley rushed for both touchdowns of the second quarter on runs of 21 and 25 yards, while Cody Little added a fourth period scoring run for the two-yard line.
The Islanders defense also did a credible job of keeping Smithfield out of the end zone. Conley had a pair of sacks, while Miller and Galacgac picked off the Packers’ Kyle Buggs, with Galacgac’s return going for a 53-yard score.
The Bull Islanders 9-1 regular season in successive seasons is the team’s best two-season effort in at least two decades. In 2010, when it also finished the regular season 9-1 before going on to win the Class 2 state championship, but last year ended with a heartbreaking 14-13 loss to Strasburg in the state semifinals.
