After a ninth-place finish at the prestigious Beast of the East tournament in Newark, Delaware last weekend, preceded by a 20-point dual match win over Salesianum, Delaware’s top-ranked team, Grassfield maintains its perch atop this week’s 757Teamz.com wrestling rankings.
The Grizzlies scored the highest finish for a Virginia team since Christiansburg placed eighth in 2012. They also won the Team Sportsmanship Award for the event.
Nate Moore, the state’s #1 ranked wrestler at 175 pounds, according to Virginia Wrestling served as one of the three catalysts for Grassfield, who finished with 99.5 points, just ahead of perennial Pennsylvania powerhouse Nazareth, provided the team’s signature win for the weekend, defeating #3 seed Ryan Meier of Blair Academy (NJ) as part of an early unbeaten run helped to vault the senior into the fifth-place bout, where he defeated Brock Frable of Southern Lehigh, (PA) 4-2.
Chris Funches (285), also ranked #1, benefitted from a string of wins to reach the Round of 12 and finished sixth overall. Cox’s Izaque Tomaz of Cox (285) was the other top eight finisher from Hampton Roads, leading the Falcons with an eighth-place finish.
Islanders Win Mike Duman Toys for Tots
Poquoson, #4 in this week’s rankings, captured the team title at the tournament, held at Ocean Lakes. The Bull Islanders topped the podium five times with – Kam Harrell (113), Logan Keese (120), Jared Goodson (132), Bryan Latta (150), and Reed Booth (157) all winning their individual weight class. The team scored 281, topping #8 Nansemond River, who collected 220.5 for second place, and #12 Ocean Lakes, with the host school totaling 186.5. Oscar Smith, a new entry this week was fifth with 156, led by Eugene Miller’s win in the 165-pound bracket.
Other individual winners included Landon Warren of Hickory (106), Jamie Goodrich from Kings Fork (138), and Grafton’s William Dickinson (285).
Granby Wins Five, including Battle of Granby St.
The Comets squad went 5-0 for the week, including wins over Warwick (51-28), Northampton (53-28), and Phoebus (39-38) at their hosted event. Five Granby wrestlers went undefeated for the day - Kaitlyn Robinson (106), Keith Fernandez (113), Liam Smith (120), Jonah Burris (144) and Tijuan Powell (215).
Tops in the State
Along with Nate Moore and Funches, several other Hampton Roads wrestlers are ranked first for their weight class. Great Bridge sophomore Vince Von Bernewitz heads the list at 113 pounds, and Brandon Cynar is #1 at 126. For the girls, Ariyanah Parson of Kings Fork is first in the 126-pound class, and Tatiana Denig from Tallwood is the top-ranked wrestler at 145.
Girls at the Beast
Six local female wrestlers represented Hampton Roads well at the Beast of the East competition, winning at least two bouts for the weekend, while facing some of the top grapplers on the East Coast.
Tabb had the most impressive outing. Jayden Crotty (105) and Chloe Temple (110) both posted 4-2 marks for the tournament, while Madlin Adams-Brady (120) was 3-2. The Tigers will be a team to watch as the movement continues for female wrestling to move toward holding its own dual meets and team tournaments.
Hayden Mayo of Kings Fork was 3-2 in the 145-pound category, and two Beach District wrestlers Addison Molina of Kellam and Avery Mattison of Ocean Lakes both evened out with 2-2 outings, with Molina at 110 and Mattison at 120.
