BETHEL 54, DENBIGH 17
Freshman Tyson Carter threw for 278 yards and four touchdowns, while Kasyn Campbell scored two first-half touchdowns to lead the Bethel Bruins to a 54-17 victory at Todd Stadium on Friday night.
With the win, Bethel (4-0), along with Hampton, who defeated Woodside 48-0 on Friday, take firm control of first place in the Peninsula District. The two teams will not meet until November 5, the final week of the season.
Bethel slammed the door quickly in the second half, scoring two touchdowns in the first four minutes to take a 47-11 lead and activate the running clock. Will Tate snared an eight-yard reception for the Bruins, and the defense followed suit with a 53-yard pick-six by Hendrix Williams, who intercepted Kevin Parker (8 of 18, 254 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT) and ran untouched into the end zone.
Bethel tallied 466 total yards, with Ziyaun Barksdale (21 carries, 178 yards) handling most of the ground chores. Barksdale did not score, but Montrell Harrison opened the game with a five yard TD burst through the middle. Jayden Short, Jesiah Johnson, and Derek Fisher also scored through the air, with Fisher’s TD coming from Keenan Carter, who played with Warhill last season.
Bethel extended its lead to 33-11 before halftime as Johnson and Campbell gathered receiving touchdowns. Previous to the scoring burst, the Patriots had struck quickly with Parker launching a 75-yard bomb that traveled 40 yards in the air before racing Jeremiah Jones in mid-stride. Parker’s two TD passes totaled 166 yards.
Tyson Carter received a sturdy workout as the Bruins elected to pass on all 13 plays leading to the first half. The Bruins gained 71 yards, but did not score. He would complete 19 of 29 passes before coach David Porter installed Keenan Carter behind center.
Callen Morrison of Denbigh led all receivers with six catches for 154 yards, including a 91-yard touchdown on an underthrown pass which caused the senior receiver to come back to midfield and wait for two seconds before catching the ball.
The Bruins will face Kecoughtan next Thursday night at Darling Stadium, while Denbigh will aim to bounce back against Heritage at Todd Stadium, also on Thursday.
