Phoebus 20, # 13 Warwick 15
Warwick (2-2) 7, 0, 0, 8 – 15
Phoebus (3-1) 6, 0, 6, 8 – 20
In the most unlikely of finishes, the Phoebus Phantoms avoided certain defeat to beat out #13 Warwick in the final 1:10 of last night’s contest at Darling Stadium to squeak out a 20-15 victory and put themselves back into post-season contention.
The Raiders’ Cameron Sanders had turned his team’s fortunes around early in the fourth quarter. After Warwick recovered a punt just short of midfield, Sanders blasted through the Phantom defensive line and sprinted 54 yards for a back-breaking touchdown which gave the visitors a 15-12 lead. Phoebus responded with an 18-play, 64-yard drive which ended with no points as Phoebus freshman quarterback Elijah Page was dropped for a two-yard loss on fourth and goal from the 3.
Although the team was deflated from the scoreless effort, the Phantom defense held together as Warwick lost two yards on three plays and were forced to give away two points as Raider QB Jabril Perry opted to run the ball out of the end zone on fourth and two from the Warwick 2, rather than risk having their punt blocked by Phoebus.
With the score now 15-14 in favor of Phoebus, the hosts received the free kick at their 41 with 1:10 remaining. Page found sophomore receiver Jeremiah Jimmerson for a 16-yard gain, and after an intentional spike, followed with another 14-yard reception to the Raider 16.
Down to 22 seconds with no timeouts and third-and-1, Page rolled right and found Jimmerson again, this time alone in the flat. The running back forged ahead and reached the end zone for the decisive score.
The play looked broken, but Page was just exercising his options, according to coach Alonzo Coley, whose team is now 3-1. “We saw leverage from Warwick and Page had two or three options. He made a great read and kept an eye on JJ (Jimmerson). It wasn’t pretty, but he made the right call there, and is doing great things for us as a freshman. And JJ can straight up ball,” Coley added.
He does recognize the team’s shortcomings, especially with a three game stretch upcoming against Highland Springs, Bethel and Hampton. “We have a lot to clean up,” Coley said.
Josh Blackwell scored the Phantoms first two touchdowns, on a seven-yard run, and later as the recipient of an 11-yard pass from Page (13-25, 132 yards, 2 TD). Rashaun Alston-Parrot added 69 yards on 17 carries. The defense held Warwick to 215 yards and just 34 passing on seven (of 13) completions.
